Since derbydad has an AP27 for sale - it reminds me. I've run into quite a number of Hanover tokens for sale of various dates and sizes. Is there a specific one that's the AP? Was the date meant to be specifically 1837? I've got one that's 13mm and one that's 23mm (and kind of a neat leaf counterstamp).

I recently ran across this link that has some good references if they ever turn up.

I'd also like to raise the same question about AP29. I saw one for sale once that had a different year.

Keuthe describes the token used by Chris Van Bern (AP27) as a 23 mm. sized, smooth rimmed token with an image left of young Queen Victoria with "Victoria Regina" on obverse and "To Hanover", "1837" on the reverse.

Thanks! You know I look at the AP pages so often and somehow I just look past the diameter/edge info.

It does still make me wonder about the wealth of information behind Kuethe's attributions that's not in the book. A whole book in itself. Here, given a token is minted for probably 30+ years with innumerable dies, that from the teens or twenties, there is one variety listed. Perhaps Van Bern had a large supply from a recent minting at that time? Or maybe because that variety is the one that survived in personal collections, attributed in documentation. Just curious if there's a story there.

I could have listed this under literature, but it's mostly a question on AP16.

I recently got a copy of TAMS Journal V12N6 Part II, December 1972, American Game Counters, by Rulau and Fuld. Notably, AP16, McCafferty, is listed under Miscellaneous as Mcy-6. It is listed as being Nickel-Silver, reeded, R6 (20-74 known), and described as a political flipping half dollar. There is a further reference to “The Numismatist”, Jan 1941.

Can anyone confirm a nickel-silver variety?
Can anyone confirm the plain-edge indicated in Kuethe? The one I have is brass but reeded (scan sent to Jon).
Anyone have Numismatist Jan, 1941?

Other interesting notes:

The scope excludes Magician’s tokens that were included in the earlier work by H. H. Kurth, “Revised list of American Game Counters”, Reprint from Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, 1952.

The Kurth cross-number appendix lists Kurth 81A as the “magic pieces not listed.” What was this? 81B is cross referenced as a radiant-eagle counter. So I assume 81A is also an eagle counter.

The bibliography lists Hawkins, R.N.P., “To Hanover Counters”, Reprint from Numismatic Chronicle, 1959. (No other mention of anything like AP27)
